COVID 19 – Information for International Students

  • Health Care: Check with your university/ college on how to avail your Institution’s health service, student health insurance, international student services and any other essential services that may be impacted.
  • Course and Curriculum: Following the growing case of corona virus (COVID 19), Canadian Universities and Colleges have taken measures to shut down on campus operations and/or move classes online. Check your institution’s website regularly for updates regarding accessing the online course content and overall curriculum.
  • Admission withdrawal / Deferral: Check with your respective institution about their withdrawal/ deferral policy.
  • Visa and Work/Study Permit: For individual specific cases of Canadian Visa and /or study permit extension and the impact of enhanced online studies on course credit and visa status, students are advised to approach their respective institutions for resolution.
  • Post Graduate Work permit: Online classes taken in Canada during this special circumstance will not affect your eligibility for a PGWP. Here is a tweet from IRCC on Friday, March 13, 2020: “International Students take note: Courses of study being delivered online on an exemption basis due to COVID 19 will not affect Post Graduate Work Permit program eligibility for a PGWP.”
  • Residence Extension: Although a number of colleges/ universities have been asking students to move out of Residence, international students who are not in a position to move out or go back home due to travel restrictions are being asked to complete the “ Residence Extension Request Form” which is available on your institution’s website, explaining their extenuating circumstances to get the approval to continue staying in residence. If there is a situation where the institution does not provide any solution, please bring this to notice of Indian Consulate if the institution falls under the consular jurisdiction of the consulate.
  •  Travel: Please note that Canada has closed its borders to foreign traveler. Please avoid all non-essential domestic or international travel.

  • MADAD Portal: Indian students are encouraged to register with Government of India’s MADAD portal to receive regular updates.

  • Part-Time work: International students may continue to work 20 hours per week. No changes to the current policy so far.
